The very best events in Plymouth this year

These events have been recognised as the best in the city after more than 40,000 votes were cast.
They're all hoping to come out on top in The Herald's The City and Waterfront Awards 2017 after being short-listed by you, the people.
The initiative is being run in partnership with the Plymouth City Centre and Plymouth Waterfront Partnership Business Improvement Districts (BIDs).
The aim is to highlight those businesses who are making a truly remarkable impression in the city and helping to improve prospects.
There are a range of award categories; and today we're giving readers the opportunity to find out more about those hoping to be awarded as best event over 5,000 people and best event under 5,000.
All of the winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony on October 26.
Plymouth Pride

Plymouth Pride is held on the Hoe and is growing in strength and popularity each year.
The event which runs annually celebrates and embraces the diversity of the LGBTQ communities.
Enjoyed by several people across Devon and Cornwall, this year the even had added extra’s as it included a Trans Zone for the first time ever – it was accompanied by face painting, inflatables, and a fun fair.

Bringing Plymouth’s historic victualing yard to life the festival launched this year and was an incredible success.
The event which hopes to become annual, brought an eclectic mix of high quality activities and experiences for the whole family.
An array of boats, classic cars, food and music was provided over the two-day extravaganza which celebrated Peninsula lifestyle and culture.
It had six stages – all of which were themed and offered something different.

The successful market that takes place on The Green see’s over 50 food and drink stalls come together at a stunning location, helping to form one of the most successful food markets in Devon.
Organised by the people behind the ever successful Totnes Good Food Sunday – the event is a fantastic family day out for all the family.
St Luke’s Hospice Neon Midnight Walk
St Lukes Hospice celebrated it's 30th anniversary this year.
Sponsored by Nash & Co Solicitors thousands of women join together to walk across Plymouth in an amazing neon themed charity walk.
Heavily relying on the local community for donations – the hospice has to raise £4 million a year to help people in desperate need of their services. The midnight walk gives a chance to make a real difference to people’s lives.
Offering three different routes, participants can choose from 3, 6 or 131 miles with party tunes and entertainment encouraging guiding walkers through the night.
All money raised goes to St Luke’s who provide specialist end of life care for over 3,400 people each year across Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall.
Armed Forces Day
A spectacular and exciting day of air displays, demonstrations, evening concerts and activities for the whole family is held annually on Plymouth Hoe.
The successful day allows the Royal Navy, Army, RAF, Royal Marines and Veterans’ organisations, charities and emergency services the chance to showcase their services.
With over 120 exhibitors, including helicopters are on display with interactive activities for all of the family.
The free event allows the residents in and around the city to show their support for the men and woman who make up the Armed Forces community.
MTV Crashes Plymouth

In its fourth year, the two-day music festival sees international stars perform on Plymouth Hoe and is enjoyed by thousands of keen music fans.
Organised by MTV in collaboration with Plymouth City Council the event offers music lovers the opportunity to see headlining, chart-topping acts for the price of regular touring gigs.
Growing year-on-year 2017 was bigger and better, bringing a number of huge hits to the South West.
Flavour Fest
Flavour Fest - Crowds enjoy the food on offer at the festival.
The South West’s largest food and drink festival has just completed its 14 year running.
Held across three days, the event sees the City Centre Piazza transformed with stalls brimming with local food delicacies, live music and a marquee bar.
Over 100 traders are showcase the best regional produce as well as cookery demonstrations from local talented and celebrity chefs.
Organisers are aiming to attract more than 100,000 food and drink lovers to the festival in 2018.
British Firework Championships
Second night of the British Firework Championships Plymouth fireworks on Plymouth Hoe
The thrilling two-night competition is held each year from the pier at Mount Battern and is enjoyed said to be enjoyed by 200,000 people from the surround areas of Plymouth Sound.
The main viewing area for the event is Plymouth Hoe, where a fairground, catering facilities and live music takes place to compliment the sparkling event.
Due to its growing success in Britain’s Ocean City the event is now world famous. Held in August each year, judges review firework displays from professional firework companies and select the best examples.
