Disappointment will be the flavour of the day for US Nokia fans as HMD has confirmed the flagship Nokia 8 will not make its way over to America.
Despite various clashing rumours suggesting that the handset will make it over to the States, NokiaPowerUser was sent a screenshot of an email sent to one of its readers from HMD’s head of sales in the US, Rex Fryhover, which explained that the Nokia 8 is “not properly banded” for the USA and as such HMD can’t ensure its pledge of “100% customer satisfaction” for American Nokia fans.
This is a tad odd given the Nokia 8 is listed on the US version of the Nokia phone website, touting the phone’s capabilities at capturing two selfies at once. The US support pages for Nokia handsets also mention the Nokia 8, so there’s potential that HMD was poised to push the Nokia 8 out into the states, but then the banding issue got in the way.
We contacted HMD for more information and clarity on the reports, and the company confirmed it will not be releasing the Nokia 8 into the US, but still has long-term plans to spread Nokia handsets across the globe.
Other Nokia handsets such as the Nokia 6 are available in the US, meaning Americans can still enjoy a slice of the revitalised Nokia handset line-up, though they will have to look elsewhere if they want a flagship Android handset.
Given we gave the Nokia 8 a solid but far from outstanding review score, it could be argued that the US is not missing out on much, particularly when there are numerous impressive Android phones available, take the recently revealed Google Pixel 2 as an example.
